Chemistry Looking one eveninglight through eye of ageing apple tree I see the swelling buds of apples on a neighbouring tree, hear a clan of doves nudging for position on a sunwarm roof and bless the chemistry of fruit and eyes and purring doves Listening next earlymorningbright I hear our pair of children breathing in full unison in sleep; one coughs, misses a beat but soon they’re back as one: in breath, out breath, in breath and I bless the chemistry of lungs and air and children’s harmony Walking down village street pyjama-clad, roused by a crack of sunlight I enjoy the warmth of flowers and cottage-walls, early fling of swifts harvesting air, and bless the ancient chemistry of clouds, gliding like waves to embrace the morning sun
